Accommodations will include communal cabins and fully catered food to nourish the mind and body. Come spend a weekend of Capoeira Angola training where you will be challenged to learn and grow in a supportive and encouraging atmosphere. When not training or playing Capoeira Angola, you can relax and recover with restorative yoga and mobility classes, learn and dance Forro, do Maculele, and Samba. We are also planning other fun activities such as local hikes, archery, fun parties, and just good old hanging out with fun people. This is an incredible opportunity to unplug, train, hang out, and play. It is what we all have been waiting for! The full schedule of activities and classes will be available over the next few weeks.

Mestre Cabello:

M. Cabello is a world-renowned practitioner and teacher of the Art of Capoeira Angola. He is a disciple of Mestre Joao Grande, and has traveled the world teaching, performing, and representing the art of Capoeira Angola for over 30 years. Mestre Cabello provides an authentic class and roda experience where everyone is encouraged to participate fully. You can expect a high level of music and traditional Capoeira Angola classes to facilitate learning and growth in your practice.

Professor Avi:

P. Avi has been dedicated to practicing and learning the art of Capoeira for over 20 years. He is a student and teacher of the whole art of Capoeira Angola including movement, music, dance, history, and philosophy. Avi started teaching Capoeira 12 years ago when he founded the Capoeira Amizade group here in Flagstaff Arizona. In January 2015 Avi was recognized as a "Professor" of Capoeira Angola under the mentorship of Mestres Cabello and Tisza of the Centro Capoeira Angola OuroVerde in Serra Grande Bahia Brazil. Avi is versed in teaching methods through the study of Capoeira Angola, but also due to his background in coaching basketball, being an instructor at the Israeli military, and his academic background that includes teaching undergraduate and graduate level class at Northern Arizona University.

Professor Chris Yanga:

P. Chris was born in the city of Xalapa Veracruz, and began his studies in Capoeira at age 14. From then on he has continued learning and teaching under the guidance of Mestre Cabello and Tisza of the Centro de Capoeira Angola OuroVerde. In January 2015, he graduated as a Professor of Capoeira Angola from Mestres Cabello and Tisza. He is currently known as a graduate in Physical Education and a specialist in cultural management and high-level sports administration. With 23 years of experience in the art of Capoeira and sport, he has taken courses in different places in Mexico and around the world.

Dora Floor:

Dora discovered her forró dance passion in 2019, when she started studying forró music and percussion. Nowadays, she's a Teacher Assistant at Forró New York Dance School and an organizer of the Forró NY Weekend Festivals. An accomplished dancer and Capoeira Angola practitioner, Dora has grown up immersed in African Brazilian cultural manifestations, and is excited to be sharing her knowledge of this iconic Brazilian dance. Be ready to have an awesome time!

What is Forró? Forró is a rhythm and also a popular Brazilian dance deriving from the Northeast part of the country. It is danced in partners, and its most important thing is connection and communication through our bodies. Fun and uplifting, it's very popular among the capoeira community.

Ana Rouxinol:

Rouxinol has been studying the art of capoeira for over two decades, teaching for the past 15 years, and continues to hone her craft following the teachings and traditions of Mestre João Grande and Mestre Cabello.

Ana received a certification in personal training through the National Academy of Sports Medicine and specializes in strength and conditioning, mobility, acrobatics, injury prevention and rehabilitation. Ana is certified in Functional Range Conditioning, TRX Suspension Training, Kettlebell Training and TRX Rip Training. Her cross-cultural upbringing in rural Liberia, urban Kenya, and upstate New York, and diverse athletic training inspire her dynamic and holistic programs, which are as challenging as they are creative. Ana will lead some mobility and dance classes during the retreat.

Emily Titcomb:

Emily has been a student of yoga since 2002, completing her 200-hour yoga teacher training at Northern Arizona Yoga Center in 2016. While drawing from a broad spectrum of teaching styles, loving restorative Yin and meditation to alignment and breath-focused flows.

Currently residing in beautiful Flagstaff Arizona as a new mum with her husband and baby boy, always enjoying adventures outside that connects her to nature. Emily will lead restorative yoga classes

Clothing:

You will need regular day-to-day clothes that are suitable for the Arizona weather. It is a good idea to have both summer clothes along with some long sleeve clothes and a light jacket just in case. For Capoeira Angola training, you need long dress pants, or Capoeira pants and a t-shirt that you can tuck in the pants. You will also need flat sole shoes and a set of all-white clothes for the final roda. The yoga and Forro classes do not have any special clothing requirements. Please reach out to Avi with any questions or concerns.

Beginners' Berimbau Workshop with Professor Avi

This is an open beginner’s workshop teaching how to play the Berimbau.

This workshop is geared towards complete beginners. We will review how to prepare the berimbau and how to properly hold it. We will learn how to produce some basic sounds and play some basic rhythms. Again, this workshop is for complete beginners and if there is sufficient interest we may offer successive workshops in the future.

We will have about 10 berimbaus to share with participants and a few for sell if you are interested in owning one of these amazing instruments. Due to the limited amount of berimbaus, please contact us to reserve a spot ASAP. We look forward to having you there!

The cost of the workshop is $10 and it will take place Saturday February 20th at 1:30 at the Center for Indigenous Music and Culture 213 South San Francisco St. Flagstaff AZ .

The berimbau de barriga (Berimbau of the stomach), commonly referred to as just berimbau, is one of Brazil's most recognizable musical instruments. It is a bow with a single steel string and a gourd resonator affixed near one end. It arrived to Brazil from Africa through the Atlantic slave trade during the colonial period in Brazil. In Africa it was and is still being used as a ceremonial and religious instrument. The Berimbau generates a distinctive sound that in modern days has come to be especially associated with capoeira, the Afro-Brazilian martial art-dance-game. The Berimbau has also been used in other African Brazilian music as well as in contemporary music.
