Our biweekly general class is the main class we offer. It is geared towards adults, but we allow experienced youth ages 13 and up to participate after they consistently attend our Saturday youth class for a few months. If you are an adult beginner, you are welcome to attend our general class. We are always excited to see beginners at class and everyone is happy to help.
A typical class consists of both movement and music practice. The beginning of class usually involves a comprehensive warm-up session and is followed by some repetitive basic technical and conditioning movements on the ground and standing up. For the final part of the movement portion of class we typically practice sequences or reactions in a more improvised manner. We often step outside of this general pattern and engage in different ways of learning and experiencing for the purpose of enrichment and fun. We often train as a group, individuals, or in partner drills. The ultimate goal of our practice is to develop competency in the movements and ritual of Capoeira Angola. However we also promote and teach basic movement complexity, mobility, and strength for the health benefits and engoyment of our members. Each class usually has a music learning and practice portion. During Mondays class group members play live music for the last half an hour of the beginners' class. We also practice the music during the Thursday and Saturday classes.
We also learn and practice Samba De Roda and Maculele. Samba de Roda is a traditional dance that originates from the Reconcavo region of Bahia Brazil and is considered to be the basis for modern samba, while Maculele is a stick dance that involves an improvisational interaction among the participants. These dances are lot of fun and contribute to the development of movement expression in Capoeira Angola practitioners.
